New Squarespace Features

One of the reasons I like working with Squarespace so much is that they are constantly adding new features. A few of my favorite recently-released features are below:

Image Masks

Until recently, the only way to have an image that was not rectangular on your Squarespace site was to either use custom CSS or create a rectangular image with a different shaped (circular for example) image within it using photo editing software. Well, not anymore!

Included in Squarespace’s new feature release is the ability to style the shapes of photos directly in your website!

All you have to do is place your photo, hit the pencil icon, select design and then shape, and then pick one of the many shapes offered. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!

List Sections

I practically jumped for joy when I saw this new feature this fall. Finally, Squarespace allows you to create a row of up to 6 content boxes (with background color or not) with similar content that will remain the same width no matter the screen size (they will stack for smaller screens), which is a great for things like pricing tables. Previously, you had to do this with custom CSS, and it was neither simple nor easy.

Here’s an example of how I used a List Section for a ballot initiative campaign. This list includes an image, a title, and body copy.

To create a List Section, you just have to add a section and select Lists.

From there, you can select from the styles Squarespace offers and then choose whether to put your image above or below your text or not have an image at all. You can choose to put each section on a colored card or not or include a button. You can change the shape of your images even! Honestly, I get a little giddy when I think about all of the fun you could have with this feature!

Background Art

Another new feature is Background Art. With Background Art, you can add unique, styled and even animated backgrounds to the sections of your web site!

I created the Background Art below by selecting the pattern option and uploading the wheel graphic. I then chose the background color, the number of images and more to create this fun and random pattern.

You can also choose the preset art options (that automatically use your color palette) or even upload your own image.

Once again, I have goosebumps from thinking about all of the fun things you could do with this new feature!

Accordion Blocks

This is another game-changing addition to Squarespace’s features. It’s a fantastic way to include large amounts of text without gunking up your page visually. It’s perfect for FAQs and the like. Below is an example from the issue campaign I referenced above. You can customize everything from the size of your text to the icon used and much more.

This list is, of course, not exhaustive. Let me know if you want to talk about how we can use some of these features to create a fantastic and effective website for your organization or business.
